Philadelphia Rescue
-
PAWS - Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society - We’re proud PAWS Partners. PAWS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving Philadelphia’s homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals. PAWS is Philadelphia's largest rescue organization and only no-kill shelter, and is working to make Philadelphia a city in which every healthy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home. Through its adoption locations, special events, and foster care network, PAWS finds loving homes for thousands of animals each year. They have a small store-front Adoption Center in Old City that facilitated the adoption of 3000 pets in 2009 (amazing), and opened a beautiful Wellness Clinic in 2010 to be Center City’s largest high-volume spay and neuter facility. They hope to spay/neuter 12000-15000 pets annually once it’s at full capacity. They’re at the forefront of animal welfare. PAWS is constantly having adoption events and benefits all around Philadelphia.

PSPCA/ACCT - This is the Philadelphia region’s largest animal shelter, which intakes over 30,000+ stranded pets per year. (Yes, you read right, 30,000+ pets per year.) Their staff and volunteers work tirelessly to keep up with the daily influx of pets that are dropped at the shelter. Volunteers are needed constantly to keep the monsters in the shelter happy and sane until a forever homes can be found. Seriously folks, we have an homeless animal crisis in Philadelphia. Volunteer. Foster. Adopt. Don’t hesitate.
-
Philadoptables.org - “We are an independent non-profit corporation that promotes and provides support for adoption, welfare, and outreach programs that benefit the 30,000+ animals received each year by the Philadelphia animal control shelter, the Delaware Valley Region's largest open-door municipal animal shelter.” One of our client sits on the board at Philadoptables and they’re working hard to get pets out the doors of the shelter, and into loving, lasting homes. Check their website for information on how to volunteer, adopt or foster from ACCT. They’re a newly formed group as of 2010 - get on board! -
Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia - These guys are an advocacy group trying to move Philadelphia forward in the animal welfare world. “Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia is comprised of taxpayers and pet lovers who are committed to saving all healthy and treatable companion animals in Philadelphia shelters. Using political advocacy, grassroots efforts and humane education, CNKP works with our elected officials, other non-profit groups and the public to raise awareness about creating No-Kill model that will save the lives of the 10,000+ shelter animals that die each year in Philadelphia. Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated in Pennsylvania in 2009.”
Trainers & Behaviorists
-
Opportunity Barks: Leigh and her crew of trainers offer private and group classes. (Puppy training, agility, problem pooches - they offer it all.) If you’re looking for an awesome trainer, with a positive outlook - Leigh is your girl. She has also helped us develop the orientation/training for our Monster Milers running group. Leigh is constantly jet-setting around the country on various speaking engagements and emailing us with awesome new training/enrichment techniques she’s learning about. (Ahead of the curve, for sure.)
-
Carol Siegrist: Specializing in reactive dogs, we have seen Carol work wonders with fear aggressive and nervous reactive dogs. Find out why your dog is acting the way he is, and let her teach you how to set your dog’s mind at ease. She has worked with both Minder’s dogs and those of our clients. Amazing results. Listen to her. She knows her stuff. Previously a behavioralist at PSPCA, she got her start working with shelter dogs. She doesn’t offer control methods to deal with behaviors, she gets at the root of them, and in the end, you’ll have a better relationship and understanding of your best friend. (100% positive, non-dominance training!)
Vets
Companion Pet Hospital: What can we say? These guys are our personal vet and the vet we recommend without hesitation whenever asked for a referral. Their team of techs and head vet, Dr. Majeska, are second to none. Because of them, our older dog, Max is literally living a healthier and happier life. If you’re looking for a proactive vet that, look no further. Countless clients sing their praises to us constantly. Our pets are our children, and we don’t trust them with just anyone. (And they have a green building, with a living wall in the lobby. How awesome is that? Oh and dedicated parking.)
Other Pet Professionals
-
Queenie’s Pets: We heart Queenies! Adina and her staff of sitters & walker are our go-to sitters to refer folks who live in Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, Germantown, Lower Roxborough, Blue Bell Hill, Wyndmoor, and a few other places in between. Amazing, personalized service. She even offers doggie hikes into Wissahickon. (And makes us Center City dog walkers jealous as we walk around the concrete jungle.) I would hands down leave my pets in her care. -
PSPupStruts: Yay for PS! They offer weekday dog walking for Northern Liberties (and beyond) and in-home boarding. In fact, whenever clients want home-boarding services, we refer to the crew at PSPupStruts without hesitation. They also have a few awards under their belts. Zoe and their crew know what they’re doing! -
Central Bark DayCare: If we opened a daycare, we hoped it would be half as good as what Portia and her crew run. They’re also very involved in rescue, which totally makes us adore them. They seem to have a constant influx of foster dogs from PAWS and ACCT, and are an inspiration to the rest of us. Leigh from Opportunity Barks also teaches her group classes here.

Bulladelphia.org - How much do you know about pit bulls? Wanna learn more about this much talked-about breed? (FYI, Pit-Mixes are the #1 dog “breed” we walk in Center City. Despite the media hype, most pit parents are responsible and caring, and raise lovely, socialized pooches. We have a ton of experience with them and love their loyalty, energy and smiles. We also share our life with a pit-whippet mix, Lola. She’s a bullwhip. Yep, a bullwhip. How can you not love that?) Learn more about the dog that everyone is talking about. “Our Mission is to reshape misperceptions regarding pit bulls in the City of Philadelphia, educate the public about what wonderful pets, family members, and companions pit bulls can be, serve as a source of information and referrals for pit bull owners, and ultimately reduce the number of pit bulls that are killed in shelters by promoting foster care, adoption, and responsible ownership.” Run by PAWS.
