What the heck is going on with the weather Philadelphia? Spring was here, and now it feels like Winter again, but really Spring is here! And with it comes the non-stop April showers, gross sidewalk puddles and muddy dog parks. While we need rain after last year's draught, it can also throw a wrench in your usual dog walking routine. But don’t worry—just because the sidewalks are constantly damp doesn’t mean your dog has to miss out on their much-loved fresh air and enrichment.
Here are 5 tips for keeping your dog happy, safe, and (somewhat) dry on rainy day walks:
Gear Up!

Invest in a lightweight, water-resistant dog jacket or raincoat—especially for smaller breeds or dogs with short fur. It’ll help keep your pup warm and dry, and it makes post-walk cleanup much easier. Also, is there anything cuter than a dog in a rain jacket? (We're obsessed!) Dog booties can protect paws from gross puddles, paw matting, and the urban grime and slime that gets tracked indoors. (Not all dogs love them right away, so introduce them gradually with treats and praise. And get ready to take video.)
Protect Against Puddle Hazards
Standing water isn’t just nasty—it can carry bacteria like leptospira, which causes leptospirosis, a serious illness that can affect both dogs AND humans. If your dog tends to sniff, splash in, or drink from puddles, talk to your vet about the lepto vaccine. It's a simple step that offers extra protection, especially during the rainy season.
Plan Ahead for Towel Time
Don't forget to place a towel near your door to give your dog a quick rubdown when you get home. (How many times have you gotten home, soaking wet, and realize you need to run to another part of the house to grab a towel?) Dry their paws, belly, and ears to prevent skin irritation and keep your home cleaner.
Don’t Forget Mental Stimulation
If it’s just too wet outside and your dog is a wet weather diva, try indoor games like hide-and-seek, puzzle toys, or basic training drills. Mental enrichment is just as important as physical exercise. Tons of our clients opt to split rainy days between potty breaks and indoor playtime. (And they love one-on-one time with a friend!)
